With its April quarterly marine-software update, Garmin has added custom messaging for its inReach satellite communicator. Boaters with an inReach and a GPSMap chartplotter can pair the two and send messages to friends and family from the MFD.

Type a message using a keyboard on the display and select the recipient from your contact list or manually type a phone number or email. Messages can be grouped by conversation similar to the interface for phone texting.

The update is available as a free download using the ActiveCaptain mobile app or from a computer using Garmin Express software.
